History of the Place called Martais

Nestled in the heart of the Breton countryside, our house is located in the peaceful place called Martais, in the commune of Mellé, in the Pays de Fougères. Like most of the outskirts of the region, the organization of the buildings does not follow a particular pattern, although the majority of them are oriented north-south.

When the first land register of Mellé was established in 1834, this gap was made up of several rows of dwellings. The homogeneity of the buildings and their dating confirm that the formation of this group dates back to the beginning of the 17th century..

Door of the cottage Au lutin pommé

An interesting feature is that a door frame has a rounded opening in the middle, which used to allow the passage of cider barrels, a testament to local traditions and the importance of cider production in the region..

Houses full of history

The buildings that make up this gap date mainly from the beginning of the 17th century. One of the buildings located to the south has a remarkable door, testimony to a rich and unique past. This door is decorated with a basket-handle arch, surmounted by an accolade itself decorated with two volutes. Just above, we can read an engraved inscription indicating the year of construction, 1609 (or 1604), as well as the name of the sponsor and a chalice, suggesting that it was once a priest's house..

An Authentic and Preserved Setting

Built in granite, with rubble and cut stone walls, and topped with a slate roof, our house blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. Its location away from the hustle and bustle of the city makes it an ideal place to recharge your batteries and enjoy the timeless charm of Brittany..
