Christian Dior grew up in this green setting, protected by a park overlooking the sea. The name Les Rhumbs comes from a nautical term designating the thirty-two divisions of the compass rose, a symbol found on a mosaic on the floor of one of the house’s entrances. From a very young age, Dior was imbued with the peaceful and elegant atmosphere of this residence, which would later influence his artistic world.

In his autobiography Christian Dior et moi, he confides: "The house of my childhood... I have the most tender and wonderful memories of it. What am I saying? My life, my style, owe almost everything to its location and its architecture." From Family Home to Exceptional Museum

In 1932, the Dior family, hit by the economic crisis and the death of Madeleine Dior, had to part with the property. It was then put up for sale and bought by the city of Granville in 1938. Its garden, designed as a natural refuge, is open to the public, offering everyone the opportunity to enjoy this green setting.

Over the years, the idea of transforming Les Rhumbs into a place dedicated to the memory of Christian Dior took shape. Under the leadership of Jean-Luc Dufresne, the couturier's second cousin and curator of Dior's heritage, a fund was set up in 1987 thanks to donations from relatives, including his sisters Catherine and Jacqueline, as well as employees of the house of Dior.

In 1997, the villa officially became the Musée Christian Dior, the only “Museum of France” entirely dedicated to a couturier. The museum has a twofold objective: to preserve and enrich the collection of objects and archives related to the designer’s work, and to offer thematic exhibitions allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Dior.

A Place of Memory and Exhibition

Each year, the Musée Christian Dior organizes an exhibition highlighting a particular aspect of the couturier's work or the legacy left by the house of Dior. Iconic dresses, accessories, sketches and archival documents are presented in an intimate setting, allowing visitors to explore the designer's world from different angles.

The museum is now managed by the Présence de Christian Dior association, in partnership with the city of Granville and the LVMH group. Thanks to the support of private patrons and public institutions, the museum continues to acquire rare pieces and enrich its collections. In 2012, it obtained the “Maison des Illustres” label, which recognizes homes that belonged to prominent figures in French history.

The villa’s garden, open to the public since 1938, remains a central part of the visitor experience.
